After the hysterics, the repeated questions about friends or family or whats or whys, most people seemed to be coming to terms with the situation. If they hadn't yet, then they could understand that their noise would draw unwanted attention from the things that inhabit the wilds. It was later in the afternoon by the time they had set out. Maybe there were a handful of daylight hours left. Whether the indigenous creatures prowl by day or night, the situation in Izmir would attract attention for miles. Toe felt that they'd have to continue down the trail in spite of nightfall just to be on the safe side, but hadn't said anything about it just yet. They'll Cross that bridge when they get to it.
There were between twenty and thirty people squeezed into the wagon behind him.
'Why do I have to drive?' he thought at intervals. It was as if that utterance was the metronome for his internal dialogue. He was the sort of person who could think about things without really thinking about things. Other people only seemed to be able to do one at a time, think or act. Think about it now and let time slip away from you when you need it or put off until later and do what you have to now. Those guards from earlier you could tell; they were stuck. They were stuck thinking protocol and spouting jurisdiction while their homes were being burned down and their friends and neighbors killed like animals. They were stuck watching gobsmacked while people begged and pleaded with them to open the gates. Then there were the citizens who were stuck, dumbstruck by what was happening and probably waiting until they find some reason for all this happening. While they were waiting for it all to make sense they'd get trampled by their neighbors or slaughtered by the rest. Some people tried to defend themselves, others ran for it. Honestly I am surprised our wagon was still where we left it and someone didn't run off with it. But.. Why do I have to drive, again?
He then looks over his shoulder at the folks packed in there like sardines. Oh, right, that's why.

Be calm, be calm; this situation is only a little worse than the first time you had to run... At least, that's what he was hoping in the back of his mind as he attended to the only person he'd been able to even remotely 'rescue'. Hmpf, that word incited a little anger in his mind. The fact was, he knew very well that such things like this were all a part of some divine plan; and he hated not being in on it. His internal clock was ticking and tapping in his chest. The woman, whom he hadn't been able to find out the name of; was thankfully still out. His healing draught hadn't really done much to clean the stump up; he was actually methodically going through this; keeping the still slightly open wound clean and starting to pack and wrap it.
He didn't even seem to notice the people around him; that's how concentrated on work he was.
Yes, he did offhandedly answer some questions; few of which he even understood himself. Questions of selfish import like 'why does she get special attention' to those of mild altruism, 'does she need more space'- it was all muddied together. He was not handling the situation well at all and his mind was shutting out most stimuli. But, it was a simmering rage that boiled deep within his chest, such foolish questions; foolish people- why if he had half a mind....
No, that won't do- it isn't proper. A simple answer in his mind, "I do require people stop pressing so firmly against me; but, to answer your questions I will be attending to less grievous wounds when we stop for camp. I am a doctor after all; and I am always prepared for medical emergencies." That may or may not help; however his attention was on a patient who was going to have to come to terms with having one arm when she woke. And that was not going to be enjoyable...

They had to be long gone from Izmir, but Keran thought he could still see smoke rise off past the horizon. He stared for a few moments, unresponsive to anyone around him, before he looked away and wondered how Chimaera had fared alone on the road back to the Estate. Probably… hopefully fine with his skillset, but after what had just happened… He closed his eyes to those that crowded the wagon, but it did nothing to stop the cloying scent of blood and grime. The crying had subsided to whimpers and low sobs, but the sounds were no less haunting.
After the first few times where he hadn’t even bothered to respond, the questions and pleads had been directed towards Toe and Nicholas. The two that actually did anything seemingly useful in the eyes of these people. ‘Yeah… how useful have I been?’ His grip tightened around the unstrung bow propped behind him as he wondered if there could have been anything done differently to avoid the situation. 'Maybe we could have fou-' The jarring though actually pulled a sharp bark of laughter from him that quickly passed as he slumped backwards. He was really fucking losing it a fight to Aeneas was looking possible to him.
Aware of the stares on him now with that outburst, he looked up towards the darkening sky and then towards Toe. Standing up, he leaned forward to whisper in a hushed tone. “Do you think you and the horse can keep this pace up all night? If we make camp and get attacked at night, it’s going to be really hard to defend them all.” MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

And there it is. I guess if the skies stay mostly clear after sundown we can get a good bit of starlight, else it'd be tough to get these horses walking where they can't see. Not to mention it'd slow us to a crawl. If someone has a lantern or torches handy.... But then do we want to be lit up like that?
"Well'uh" his voice was as a low hum that, if you didn't pay attention, would seem to dissipate into the ambient sounds of the trail. he thought about just how long they'd been in Izmir before giving the reins some slack. "Sweet talk em and they'll go. As for keeping this up all night, they hadn't gotten that much rest ya know? There and back isn't too bad so you could run em like that. Osaka's a little ways away."
It's also the only real option as far as I know. Any small village in the remote area probably is getting hit right about now. Even if we pass some by, I don't think many would care to take on this many folks. Eh, just get them somewhere else. They were just looking to not be at Izmir, I doubt they put much thought into their long terms.
"The noise from Izmir is bound to attract most of the things we'd worry about. I'd say that once you can't see the smoke anymore we should be fine to stop, if needed."
Briefly he thought over it all again. Begin with the end in mind, the saying goes.
"What do you know about Osaka?"

The cart continued down the road, bumping and jerking over rocks and holes in the ground. The people sat in hushed whispers as Toe continued to drive the cart. Some napped against others, some grumbled, while others gave the three who led them worried looks. An air of uncertainty hovered over them all.
"Are you alright dear?"
"Yeah... yeah, those other guys got what they deserved."
"Those demons are purged now thanks to the Zeen corps."
"Mm. The light of god has saved us and damned those heathens."
"Mom... I'm hungry..."
"It's alright dear. Here, take this apple for now."
"I hate apples..."
Could these three really keep them safe?
A small groan came from the woman that Nicholas was operating on and she opened her eyes slowly before looking around. "Uhn... my head. Where am I?" The last thing she remembered was the city being attacked. Confused, the woman tried to sit up.

((Sorry about not waiting for a post from ya, Nigel, but I'm going to be out for the rest of the day soon, so I figured I'd get something up.)) So essentially they might be able to make it, but there was a decent chance the horses might get too tired and leave them stuck somewhere. Considering the dangerous forest that the main road went through on the last leg towards Osaka? More of a death sentence than not to be in there. Better to give them a chance to rest up, so the group could push through that area as quickly as possible.
“Well if you think the horses need rest, then now might be a good time as any. There’s a stretch just before Osaka that’s just a Beast-infested forest,” he muttered quietly to keep it from the others in the wagon. “Made a run from Izmir to Osaka awhile back and ran into some trouble there. As for Osaka? Not too much really, I was only there for a few hours before we started the return journey. Fair bit larger than Izmir. We can get them to the city, but getting inside will be up to themselves.”
Grinding his teeth, Keran schooled his expression even as he turned around to stare at the passengers in the wagon with him. The temptation was fleeting and he turned back towards Toe after a moment. Kicking them off would only have, at the moment, negative ramifications. If they started to brew discontent or conflict in the day or so of travel that was left to Osaka? Well... "Oh please, the gods had nothing to do with that wholesale slaughter. That's called 'government issue' right there... Very messy and typically over reactive. Truly outrageous." He of course was using a dampened cloth to wipe away excess fluid from the wound that hadn't really healed fully. As it was a wound on the grievous side of course, even so. He had that worried expression only a doctor could really give. One that was detached but also very in tune with the terribleness of the situation! A soldier's attitude almost...
Except his battlefield was far different than theirs, and he didn't really take orders from anyone.
However, as his patient tried to sit up; he actually placed three fingers to her forehead and basically kept her down and in place, "You shouldn't be moving- especially after suffering such a debilitating injury. You're lucky I'm a doctor or else you might have died. However... You did lose your arm. Not your life, your arm- so don't start wailing about that just yet please." He did try to effect a smile; which just came off as 'creepy and ineffectual' which was fine with him.
He was just trying to help.

He said he found some trouble in Osaka, but then there's never any short of trouble for someone looking for it. Aside from that he either didn't seem to know too much about it or maybe he just didn't feel like telling. Beast infested forests, though. It is what it is, and it was sounding like more bad news.
The bad ain't going anywhere, so may as well pace yourself rather than trying to roll over all of it at once. He then removed his hat for a little bit so his hair could catch some of that cool wind. What do I know about Osaka? He pondered, as If this was a new thought that he had found under his hat. What do I know.. about Osaka? Had he been there once, couldn't really remember for sure. Maybe the place was forgettable like that. Isn't it that place that Sam was from? He was chatty, I should remember something:
'Sam I am, Samson of the Gudde family, that'd make me Samson Gudde. It's Pronounced Good, NOT Guh-dey, Guh-duh or anything else just Good; Try not to wear it out too much, uh Buddy? Guddes have been in Osie-kay for as-long-as-i-can-a'member (and that's what my great old grand paps would say and he's been around as-long-as-any-can-a'member). And every since we been in Osie we been in the business, the business of doing business, and business is Good. It so Good, lemme tell you something; It is so good that you'd be hard pressed to find better family owned establishment within a country mile and that's the plain old honest to goodness truth. If you can't remember an-y-thing else I say then just remember this... '
Yeah, he was chatty. I even listened sometimes. It was always a bunch of jabber without really saying much and was good at putting me to sleep. I think he is some kind of merchant.
He stopped thinking about all that for a moment because he could feel someone's eyes on the back of his head. It was still Keran who he had thought would move back into a seated position after the guy had turned his gaze back to the people in the wagon. Maybe he had asked another question and I managed to miss it. It did seem like he was expecting something still, Toe just didn't know what at the moment.
Nicholas was lively back there all of a sudden, he said something or another about government that I could hear. Probably going to get the people riled up again. What is the story on Izmir going to be for everyone else? Probably whatever is the easiest to get folks elsewhere to believe. Even if it sounds fishy, I don't think many without relatives in Izmir (what used to be Izmir) would care to ask around. If no one is around to find it or believe it, i guess the truth don't matter.
"Keep your eyes open for anything in the distance, Keran. You've been through here before"
