The mess hall might not have been the best place to sit down with a book. Loud bangs on occasion, the swell of conversation — it was a distracting place. But, the quiet wasn't something Chimaera wanted to be consumed by after the last few missions. The louder a space was had simply been the better. The pot of herbal tea radiated warmth with how close it sat next to his forearm while he was consumed with the pages of the book he had found during his first mission. Absently, he reached out to grab a bit of bread to chew while he turned the page. Not all minding company — in fact, welcoming a distraction.

He drew himself away from the words easily enough to glance up at the stranger. "Please, I welcome the company stranger," he replied. The book was closed and pushed off to the side. The History of the Republic could wait for another day.
Chimaera sipped at his tea and gave the stranger his full attention. "Oh, that's horrible - the estate has a library that may satisfy your taste. Could also speak with a young man named Aiden. He is a lover of books himself," he continued. He raised his hand, outstretched toward the stranger with a smile. "Chimaera Gray; it's nice to meet you."

He glanced at the book. "I'm from the New Republic originally - but we never lived close to a large city or anything. I just wanted to brush up on the history of where I was born," he explained. He looked back at Zandack, and picked up his tea once more to sip at to give him a short pause in conversation. "New Republic will be a safe haven for your friends, Zandack - they're a lot more accepting of what others may consider 'oddities' of nature," he added.
"But, as for where I call home now? Nirdan. My father moved us there after my mother's murder. It's a nice, hard-working town. A good place to call home," he stretched out and shrugged, "I'm here because I've always, in a small way, been in the rebellion. My mentor was in the first - and some of her ideals were imprinted on me. After she was excuted, I started to see how tyrannical King Oliver's rule actually was. Especially, in comparison to the Council that rules over New Republic."

"A small world indeed. The kingdom is a bit more relaxed with all the magic and other races that call it home."
Inquisitively, his brow raised. "The Council may take a hands off approach but they do see to it that every citizen - human or other - has a proper place to call home," he paused for a breath before he continued, "but you're right. I lived out in the frontier where we held our own. Crime is high and that's why the Knights of Balaria conscript. It's dangerous there for someone that doesn't know how to protect themselves from it."
Chimaera took a sip of his tea and sat it back on the table before he folded his hands in front of him and rested his chin on his knuckles. "Both Oliver and his father were tyrants - honestly anyone raised in that bloodline may turn out to be the same as the last. I am with you though. The past is damned to repeat itself in an endless cycle unless something or someone learns from it. Perhaps, Hiroshi doesn't look that far ahead into the future. But, he does seem a man to learn from the past. Maybe when this is all over, if we win, it will give the Council a boot in the backside to start helping its people rather than being completely reserved from their needs."

"Confident? Only in his abilities as a leader - as a man? Not that much; I am a little bias as a recent mission he sent myself and others on went badly. I didn't agree with his decision, as I'm sure the others didn't either."
"The conscription? Far as I know it's isolated to just New Republic. My eldest brother was ... recruited by them when I was very young. I haven't seen him since," said Chimaera. His brow furrowed as he tried to recall the age Konstantine had been when they had come to their homestead and had delivered the news. It brought up a pain he thought he had buried long ago, but with his focus on Zandack he was able to push it back again. "You're right - he was young. Barely in his teens if I remember right. I don't know the right or reason behind it. My brother was the first born but not my parents only son. From what I can remember, my father did talk about how some of the outlining villages had their first born conscripted as well. - Perhaps it was just the less fortunate citizens who were apart of the mix. I've never been to the capital to ask." He clicked his tongue against the inside of his cheek and shrugged.
"There is a Knight of Balaria here now - she recalls, vaguely, my brothers name. I should ask here how that's done in New Republic - if she came from there."

His gaze momentarily flickered to the symbols that prominently made up Zandack's attire before he would once more focus back on the man. "Conscription is a fine line, indeed. But, kidnapping it is not - I don't agree with the act of conscription. My brother was taken from me after all. But, for her direct opposition, I am not arrogant enough to question the whims of gods." He leaned forward and allowed his arms to rest on the table. "She is a goddess of protecting the innocent - and the innocent are in danger; makes a sort of odd sense she wouldn't mind the conscription if it meant people are being protected."
His press of questioning was a healthy change from the constant debrief or retelling of events in such a monotone response. Chimaera took a deep breath at the question though, and ran his hand through the thick of his hair as he cringed. "You're fine. The mission was a waste of time - one that cost us a valuable member of the New Dawn. Vicros. He wasn't able to clear a gap in the flooring and fell." He rested his palm back on the table, facing upward to show the scarring across the palm. "Myself and Keran had hold of the rope but he was too heavy. We had to let go or risk losing three instead of one."
Chimaera winced. "And I was controlled by a force, my will taken from me. I nearly killed another member of the New Dawn because of it," he continued. Chimaera took a deep breath, the second since the conversation started, and leaned back. "As for the disagreement; we rescued a small boy and had evidence that the native tribe he belonged to was lying. Still sacrificing their children to an Ifirt, being unnecessarily cruel to them. The boy asked for sanctuary and we agreed. The natives demanded him back, and Hiroshi gave the order." He bit his lip, tugged at it slightly as he reached out for his tea again. "So, we did as ordered. Arlen, I believe, made sure to make a promise to the tribes Elders that if the boy was harmed - he would make a personal visit to them."

Aiden walked into the mess hall dressed in casual attire and and holding a book on demons. He felt much better after a day of resting on a comfortable bed. His nose was still a little red but he wasn't sniffling nor did he have the splitting headache anymore from a day ago. It was a full recovery! The lad suddenly sneezed into the corner on his arm. Well, maybe not a full recovery, but getting there. Looking around he spotted Chimaera at a table with a stranger. Aiden walked over and waved to Chimaera to get his attention.
"Ah Mr. Chimaera! How are you? Who is this? A new friend?" The young man sat at the table and looked the newcomer up and down curiously.

A sparkle appeared in Aiden's eyes as he was referred to as sir. He grinned and shook Zandack's hand. "Hello, Zandack Serpenthelm! I'm Aiden Fisher. I do tend to read a lot. There's always so much information to be found in books. Don't worry about the books you left at home, I'll bet our own library will have a copy. There's a lot of stuff in there. What brings you to the New Dawn though?"

"You're fine - in these times a lot of unpleasant memories will be relived," Chimarea said. He sat in silence, and simply listened to Zandack. Simply, he nodded to what the man had to say and when it came time to say something he spoke the first thing that came to mind. "The Natives were lying to us - stating that they stopped the practice of sacrificing their children over fifty years prior. The evidence in that temple proved otherwise in my mind. The boy was frightened enough to ask us to bring him here, to protect him. But, as you said, I am sorry those bloody idiots will dig up something in their faith that defends their actions." He waved Zandack's concern off with a small smile.
"Lightheartedness in conversation will be a rare animal these days with what we are attempting to do. But, as for casters? That is a dangerous thing to attempt here in Alexius. I only know of one ... and possibly another. He says he is a paladin one second and the wizard a next. A strange fellow," Chimaera took a breath and let it out slowly, "you can't miss him as he keeps drawing attentions to his abnormalities. Something which needs to be addressed before it gets us all executed. A man like him is unique enough to draw notic-"
He was interrupted by the familiar voice, and almost instantly his tension seemed to relax more. A known face putting him at ease. He slipped to one side to allow Aiden room to join them. "We were just getting friendly, Aiden - seems like we have ourselves a little book club going here. All three of us avid readers and the like," said Chimaera. He reached over and pulled the History of the Republic tome closer to him along with his pot of tea and cup so not to crowd Aiden when and if he took a seat.

Aiden set his book on the table and looked over at Chimaera's tea with a blank face. How could he enjoy that? It tasted very bland to him. The boy looked up at the ranger. "Have I missed anything Mr. Chimaera? I was in bed for the past couple of days. That long trek back to the estate was exhausting."

Briefly, he wondered if Aiden had heard the news about Vicros - or had his cold chained him to his room where little news could reach. He decided it was best that he not be the one that told his friend that someone he knew had died. Or that they couldn't retrieve his body from the horrid temple they had crawled out from - lucky to be alive themselves. "Nothing really - a mission to Izmir is all, but beyond that," he trailed off.
"Trust me, Zandack - I doubt he's either. I think we just keep him around for our own amusement. But, again, he will be deadly to us all once the news of us being around gets out. He is very recognizable." He paused for a moment and peered at the book that Aiden carried himself. His brow raised slightly as the memory of that first mission sent a shiver down his spine. "Gods, Aiden - are you actually looking into that thing? Are you planning on going on the return mission there? Back to where Kirah died?"

Aiden's eyes widen when Zandack tells him this. "Wah! You a magic-noodle too Mr. Zandack? Can you pull a rabbit out of hat? Or make a coin appear from behind your ear? You magic people are great, I don't understand why Oliver would want to kill you. Are you sure it isn't just a misunderstanding? I don't think killing is the correct answer to anything. Everyone's got good in them, right? Perhaps we could just ask him to stop. As for me being here, I was brought here by some other members of the New Dawn when I helped them fight off a couple bears. The food an housing isn't that bad here either. This place has given me a purpose, to stop Oliver."
Aiden lifted the book and set it on the table. "Ah, I'm not that knowledgeable about it Mr. Zandack. That's why I'm reading about it. There's a demon we're to stop, so I'm reading up on it more." Aiden looked over at Chimaera. "Maybe Killashandra and Vicros won't have to use that orb after all. Hopefully there's a way to defeat it without a sacrifice. And of course Mr. Chimaera. When you start something, you always have to finish. By the way, are you talking about Mr. Anus? He's pretty weird. He has a tail and wings, and pretty sharp teeth."

Aiden blinked in surprise and awe as the tricks happen. "Wait, did you say Karkuul? Mr. Keran and Vicros know a lot about him so you should talk to them... um... or is Karkuul a her? Karkuul sounds like a "cool" name but I wonder if gods mind nicknames, Karky sounds cooler. Ah... oh right the demon! One of our friends summoned a demon to go destroy Rosentine. Vicros and I we..." Aiden frowns and looks down at the table, the naive luster in his eyes fading a little as the memory resurfaced into his mind. "... We put a stop to her in hopes that it would prevent the demon from emerging, but that thing is still out here. I don't want innocent people being killed by that thing, so I'm just trying to research more into it to figure out how to beat it. Mr. Arlen and Mr. Chimaera actually talked to it, so they would know more, right Mr. Chimaera?" The young lad looked over at Chimaera as he asked.

"Erm..." Aiden looked up and tilted his head to the side. "I don't know what kind is it, but there were a lot of shadows around it when it came out. It looked like some giant alien thing. It was really pitch black and tall and had two arms and two legs and a tail. As for the orb, it just looked like a regular orb to me, but it made our horses feel sick when it was around them, so maybe it affects animals somehow. Ms. Killashandra and Mr. Vicros have said that it requires a sacrifice to banish a demon back to its realm. If that's the case, I don't want to use it." Aiden looked back at the mage. "Say, are all demons really bad? Maybe we can talk to it and ask it nicely to go home."

"Often times people fear what they don't understand. If the fear is great then it can turn into a need to snuff out the thing that causes it."
Chimaera finished his tea, and stared down at the patterns the leaves had made on the bottom. He could only recall a few lessons from his mother on reading them, and though most looked like a blob, some were recognizable to him. "I think Killashandra would be the one to use it now," he said offhandedly. He glanced up first at Zandack and then back to Aiden. "I intend to finish it, Aiden - just not by returning to that well. I'll take the orb back to the Guardian when the time comes for it." He fell silent, and watched Zandack perform his talent. Magic had been a common sight for him before he had moved to Alexius. Though it had been a while, and it still made him smile, it wasn't something that would cause him to be jolted from his calm demeanor. He clapped softly for the small tricks performed, however, as it did bring a little light to his day.
He kept quiet about his own involvement in the search for information about Karkuul and instead listened to both men converse between each other until he could slip in to the conversation again. "it did speak to me, Aiden - as for talking to it? It won't work. The only reason it let us leave is because Kirah bargained with it for our lives before her death. Trying to reason or talk at all with this thing that's sole purpose is destruction would be a very foolish thing to do," he continued.
Slowly, he pressed his palms against the wood of the table to push himself up. He gathered his book from the table and pulled it toward him. "If you excuse me gentlemen, I have prayers I need to attend to," he trailed off and squeezed Aiden's shoulder, "Perhaps, you should talk with Hiroshi later - and read the last mission report - you've been under the weather for too long," he said apologetically. Looking between the two men, he offered a curt nod to the both before stepping out of the mess hall.

Aiden sighed and puffed out his left cheek. He set his elbows on the table and rested his chin on his palms. "Ah... that's a bummer. If I was a demon I would love to discover everything about a new world. But if it does disrupt the balance I guess it's better to make them leave."
The young man got up and dusted himself off. "Well it was great meeting you Mr. Zandack! You should definitely talk to Ms. Killashandra about Karkuul. She actually has a tome on... him." Aiden paused for a moment as he tried to remember if Zandack had told him if Karkuul was a him or her. "Say, are you up to anything later?"

Aiden puts his backpack and gave a small nod to Zandack. "I thought perhaps you would want to meet Killashandra, Keran, and Vicros to learn more about Karkuul. Also maybe she can fill me in more on what's been going on."
