This isn't a petition per se as much as it is an idea that could be implemented for the Ranger companion option in the game. After researching extensively on the subject I've found that not only has a majority of DMs expanded on the short list of companions for a Ranger but the creative director James Jacobs himself has openly stated this fact and makes to expand the list whenever he runs his own games. Often allowing players to extend the listing by choosing a companion from the longer list presented in the Druid section of the Core Rulebook. My idea is simply something that I cooked up and could be expanded upon since I haven't found mention of this on any of the Chiyo wiki or board postings.
A Ranger doesn't receive the ability to make the choice for the optional companion class feature until they are level 4, as we all know. So as not to make the companion or the character overpowered it should be a mandatory rule set that a ranger's first companion should be in line of the ones mentioned in the Core Rulebook, under the class. Limiting them to a badger, bird, camel, cat (small), dire rat, dog, horse, pony, snake (viper or constrictor), or wolf. While maintaining the same limitation to a certain level, like level 6. Until then, when their animal companion dies they still can only choose from the list provided in the ranger section. However, upon reaching the aforementioned level point they are able to choose a companion from the druid section of the core rulebook.
But, with limitations on surrounding area wildlife. If something more exotic is in mind of the player, say an ape, that could be a session in itself for the player and a DM to work together with to obtain. In possibly a 'hunt' event. This is a very rough draft of my idea but I wanted to pitch it forward regardless to see the general consensus on the topic. As I have spoken with Erin before, jokingly throwing around the dinosaur companion idea for a druid. Which originally, might I add, started me on the path of thinking of this.
